Patient Info

Anaesthesia is required for many medical and surgical procedures. Understandably the thought of having an anaesthetic for surgery may cause a degree of anxiety for many patients. All our anaesthetists are highly trained medical specialists and there is no safer place in the world to have an anaesthetic than in Australia. We believe that reducing this anxiety is an important component of our job. The provision of information will reduce this anxiety and we hope the information provided on this website will be part of this.

Anaesthesia can take on many forms including:
  • local anaesthesia – numbing a small part of your body
  • regional anaesthesia – numbing a larger region of your body e.g. arm, leg, lower body
  • sedation – sleepy but not fully unconscious
  • general anaesthesia – fully unconscious

Sometimes a combination of these will be used.
